funny moment

So devon had bed time at 9pm but he thinks that he is tricky or "sneaky" as he puts it. well when he goes to bed he took his ds with him; he didnt think that I knew that he snuck it in but I did. Now i'm watching a movie (which is new for me finally adjusting to working during the day and its really nice but more on that another time) and it is 10pm and I still hear the ds so I go into his room and take the ds away. The thing is i'm not mad at him when I ask him if he thought I knew. I told him I knew from the time you were in bed at the beginning. He truly seemed shocked and starting giggling. He wondered in amazement how I knew and I used the line of i'm a mom and I will know everything you do. Then i tell him "plus I have already been sneaky even before you were here." As i'm walking out of the room he asked me if I would tell him one of my pranks and sadly I had to tell him that I can't reveal my secrets. Well in true devon fashion he tells me that "I just want to know so that I can pull the prank on nathan" it was just one of those moments that I have to laugh bc he is just like me.

school is almost out.

so devon has two more days of school left. he had graduation today atschool. he received his kindergarten diploma as well as the "most creative thinker award" and "outstanding student award". i think that devon is ready for summer and i would have to say that i am excited about not having to have the morning battle everyday. we got season passes to schliterbahn and the zoo so hopefully between those two and discovery green we will have lots of fun over the summer.

it really is not my fault

so i just wanted to let you all know that my internet has been down at my house since 4/14/08. it was just my luck. devon and i are trying to streamline the family finances so we cancelled our home phone because we did not use it enough to justify the $40 bill per month. well at the same time of scheduleing for the landline disconnect i increased our internet to faster service but it all went wrong at that point. the internet was partially disconnected on 4/14/08 and at&t could never figure out how to get the problem corrected so i decided to just cancel the service all together. well the most exciting thing in devon's life recently was our road trip to san antonio. we went up to visit nikki and her family. i would have to say it was a blast. devon hit it off with nikki's sister, emily. they played together and when we spent the day at the riverwalk devon kept going after her hand. it was the cutest thing. autumn, nikki's youngest sister, was super fun. the drive to san antonio was easy enough since it is a straight shot on I-10. along the way we stopped at buc-ee's which is a super convenience store that has like 30 gas pumps and tons of food. the bathrooms, as silly as it sounds, were great. the food and drinks are slightly over priced but it does not deter the people on road trips. if you every have the opportunity to go to buc-ee's try thier jerky and beaver nuggets. so while we were in san antonio we spent a day just hanging out at mary and steve's (nikki's mom and step-dad). we visited the riverwalk on saturday. the weather was perfect not to hot or humid. there was a children's festival going on when we were there and all the kids really seemed to enjoy it. nikki and i were supposed to hit the town on saturday night but both of us fell asleep when we got home from the riverwalk. oh, i need to share a moment that was super funny. we are walking through the mall at the riverwalk and devon took a drink of water and it went down wrong so he spit it out. the funny part of it was that as devon is spitting the water out he looked like a fountian. he was pretty mad that i was laughing at him but i could not help it. once i get my internet back i will post pictures of the weekend.

a solid effort is needed

i can not believe that i have not posted in more than a month on the family blog. what is wrong with me? i swear i think that i lose days. well i guess what i am going to try and do is blog at least once a week so that all the important people in devon's life stay in the know about all the exciting events that make one day blur into the next. so saturday we were very excited to see rachel. so we go out to kingwood and visit for a while then we head to the church for dave's baptism. it was a wonderful service and you could really feel the spirit in the room. i personally touched when dave was just overwhelmed and he started crying then rachel then the rest of the room. that was soon diffused by some funny joke. after the service devon was heelying in the church parking lot and decided that he was doing to add some disco moves with it. it was one of the funniest things that i have ever seen. i will have to have devon do it again and i'll take a video of it. then we get back to julee's and i had made enough water balloons to fill about half of a big 50 gallon tote. devon, rachel, michael, the elders, and myself had a water balloon fight. i tried not to engage in the water balloon fight too much so that i could take a video which i will try and upload to the blog. so then later in the evening devon is complaining that his throat is sore so we headed home. devon slept for most of the night but woke up around 3am throwing up. so then today devon laid on the couch all day and if any of ya'll know devon he is not one who lays on the couch unless he just landed on it while leaping across the room. i could not keep his fever to get under 100 degrees then devon asked me "mommy am i going to die" at that point i decided that if he is feeling that bad then we are going to the hospital. we headed up to memorial hermann hospital er. julee, rae, matt (rae's boyfriend) and brother croft came up to the hospital and gave devon a blessing. it took everything that i had not to cry. i can't imagine the parents of kids who are really sick what emotional toll it takes on them but it must be great. so that is all that i can think of right now. i will write more about some recent events in devon's life later. we love all who read this and hope that life is going well for you and your family.

time just flys

i thought there would be comfort in routines but all it creates is a blur. it is great not having any major stresses in life but because life is so peaceful all the days run together. devon has been working on reading more. it is frustrating because he gets upset if he doesn't get it right off the bat. i tell him that it takes practice to become a good reader but his patience is pretty thin. i am not quite sure where he gets it from ;-) devon is really excited that the pool at our apartment is now open. other than that life is the same old thing.

the start of spring break

i had a whole post almost ready to go but i am not quite sure what happen to it so i will start a new rundown on devon's spring break so far. devon has been great. we went to the rodeo with edy and gavin last week. it was a lot of fun. devon and edy did the haunted house together. devon did several other rides. i would have taken pictures but it seems to be my luck lately that i either don't have my camera with me or the battery is dead. i rented "bee movie" which devon tried to get me to watch several times but i kept falling asleep. devon and i went to incredible pizza which is basically a supped up chuck e cheese. we played two round of golf one following the rules and another just having fun. i found it very humorous that when i was asking devon if he wanted to go to incredible pizza or the movies he responds with "actually mommy i would prefer to go to chuck e cheese" there are many times that devon has comments like this he is not shy when it comes to expressing himself at home. oh, the other quirky thing about devon lately is that he is incredible comfortable with his body. he loves to run around naked and i really do try to allow him to be his own person but there are moments when i think that i would enjoy not having a child that is so open and comfortable about his body. we are working on sight word and learning to read which has been a challenge i think more for me than him. i am not a patient person and it seems that my dear son has that same trait in him. it is not for lack of ability that he is not reading yet but it is the lack of me having the patience to teach. i like to believe that i just don't know what approach is best for him which keeps me from giving him the tools that he needs to succeed. i guess this is where the learning curve come in at.

being busy

well it has been a little bit since i posted. i lost track of this week. devon and i don't really have that exciting of a life. basketball is over and i only work one job right now but it seems that time just flys. well we went to the rodeo for the last dat of the cook off. i was excited about the chance to try all different bbq but it did not quite turn out that way. we did end up getting some bbq but it seemed that all the booths had private parties. devon and i then went to the carnival. we went in a fun house together and then devon used the rest of his tickets by himself. he ended up going in another fun house, down a slide that you use a potato sack to help increase your speed twice and he went in a haunted house (by himself). we took the metro rail home which i have to say is very cost effective. for $3 devon and i got to the rodeo and back and did not have to worry about gas consumption or parking. the other really monumental thing that is happening in our life right now is devon is really working on learning to read. i am sad to report that devon has just about as much patience as i do which is not a lot. he get a check mark for everyday that he practices his words and/or read a book. i know that it is a process and i am hoping that the check mark system helps to motivate him because after he gets so many check marks then he get a prize.

the weekend wrapup

this was a great weekend. it was not that we had anything super exciting it was just overall a great weekend. on friday when i was getting devon up for school made me laugh so hard that i peed my pants. seriously, i mean just a little but i really did. i am waking devon up for school and he tells me "mommy why do you keep bothering me. don't you know i am sleeping? you always come in here and bother me trying to wake me up. thats why i am grumpy because you keep waking me up." so then i came home from droppong devon off and i slept which is not what i typically do but i had to sleep or i would break my fast. i was trying to do "the master cleanse" and i reached day five but my anxiety was through the roof. my emotions were so out of balance because i was not taking my medication. see the diet said that you can take some medications but it is not recommended because when fasting you body functions differently fasting than it does when you are eating. well i when i woke up i could definatly say that i work up on the wrong side of the bed. so i broke the fast 5 days into the 10 day cleanse. oh and the kicker to close friday, i locked my keys in my car when devon, kelli, and i were at my house. so we ended up being locked out of the house and the car. saturday devon and i went and saw "the spiderwick chronicles" it was pretty good. devon stayed interested the entire time so that means that he liked it. we came home and just lounged around the house the rest of the night. devon and i worked on some flash cards and pages in his workbook this weekend. it is nice to just lounge around the house but i have realized that devon is much more of a homebody than i am.

i got played

devon was sick today; at least that is what he said. i came home tuesday morning and devon had his set up in the bathroom for when he is sick. when devon is not feeling well he takes a pillow and blanket to the bathroom so that he can sleep on the floor. this ensures that he makes the toilet when he is going to throw up. this morning he did have a fever at 101.4F so i let him stay home from school. i think that the fever was just a ploy to watch nick all day. devon was great he let me sleep off and on the entire day but i never really got a good amount of sleep. it seemed that as the day progressed we did at least get devon's room clean. that always seems to be a battle between us. i try to keep the philosophy of i can close his door if his room is messy. i try and pick the battles that we are going to have and a clean room is not a battle most days that i want to fight.

it was nice to relax

it is a rare day that devon and i stay at home. it was really refreshing to have a day at home. we woke up around 9am and did not leave the house the entire day. we got to play board games and watch tv/movies. we played zooreaka, a game that devon got for chiristmas, which i have to say was a whole lot of fun. devon won but just barely. he really has a competitive streak which i hope will take him far in life. we watched basketball and disney movies. oh, and in true devon fashion as an acrobat he almost really hurt himself jumping from one couch to another. i am waiting for the first broken bone. i know that it will happen the only question is when.
